Spring 2012 anime season preview

Time passes quickly doesn’t it? With the passing of winter, some of my faves from last season, like Another and Nisemonogatari have also ended. Anime fans will have lots to look forward this season though, with the return of a certain Type-Moon anime and the sequel to one of my favourite sci-fi mecha anime. Now, its time to check out what my personal anime picks for the Spring…

Winter 2012 anime season preview

New Year, new anime season, less HDD space. The winter season has brought not just cool weather, but a slew of new anime series as well. Some of my faves from last season include Fate/Zero and Un-Go. While the current crop of anime will not need to compete with one of Type Moon’s most popular series (the creators, wisely, splitting the series into two seasons), they will still have to go against other series like Last Exile – Fam the Silver Wing, Guilty Crown and Persona 4. So let us check out the series’ which I think will stand out from the pack this season…

If you like suspense and mystery, this upcoming anime series “Another”, premiering January 9, 2012 will definitely be a treat for you! (Yes, Higurashi fans I’m talking about you guys >,<)

My personal favourite so far has been Kamisama Dolls and Usagi Drops. The autumn season though seems set to outshine the summer, with popular series like Shana and Ika Musume returning. So let us take a look at my personal favourites for the coming anime season…

Spring 2011 Anime Season Preview

I might have chose Gosick as my pick of last season but I think (and I am sure quite a few will agree with me) that the biggest surprise and sleeper hit for Winter 2011 surely belongs to Puella Magi Madoka Magica. Thus I am hopeful that the coming season will have more pleasant surprises for anime fans to look forward to, even as we remember those who died in the recent quake and tsunami in Japan.

As usual,  all information in this preview is taken from AniDB.net / Anime News Network. Do note that broadcast dates might be subject to changes due to the Japan quake.

Trailers: Space Battleship Yamato, Fan-made live-action Pokémon

[youtube tbupyeGlBPA]

The latest live-action Space Battleship Yamato movie trailer, starring Takuya Kimura and Meisa Kuroki. This full trailer includes the movie’s theme song, Love Lives, written and sung by Steven Tyler of Aerosmith. The movie is set to be released in Japan on the 1st of December this year. For more cast and plot details, you can check out my earlier post.

A somewhat “intersting” take on Pokémon. Ash struggles in a world where Pokémon fights have been outlawed. Many Pokémon characters are featured in the trailer, including Misty, Brock, Team Rocket and Mewtwo.

Thoughts: A rather bizarre and humorous interpretation of Pokémon. If this ever translates into a real movie, it’ll likely bomb as per the recent live-action adaptations of Dragonball and King of Fighters. Space Battleship Yamato on the other hand seems destined for box-office greatness…in Japan at least. No release dates have been set for Singapore or any other Asian countries save for Hong Kong (22 March 2010 @ the Hong Kong International Film and Television Market, likely trying to promote or sell it to potential distributors). No release date has been set for the US either, despite its popularity back in the 197os and 80s as Star Blazers. The only other country with a release date according to IMDb is Brazil, with the film set to be released there on the 31st of December, 2010.
