More announcements from the Animax Asia Facebook page. Shangri-La, a sci-fi action anime based on a Japanese light novel by Eiichi Ikegami, will be premiering on Animax Asia on September 19, Monday to Friday at 11pm.
Shangri-La tells the story of Kuniko Hojo, who finds herself in a middle of a battle for Atlas, a tower city built to house the rich and privileged located in Tokyo, which has been turned into a jungle in an effort to combat global warming. In the midst of a guerilla war against the government of Atlas, the truth behind the tower’s construction begins to unravel…
Shangri-La is animated by Gonzo, with Makoto Bessho (Ah! My Goddess movie, Armitage: Dual Matrix) directing and Hiroshi Ohnogi (Sousei no Aquarion, FMA: Brotherhood) scripting the series. Range Murata (Blue Submarine No. 6 and Last Exile) is in charge of character design. Female lead Kuniko is played by Mikako Takahashi (Hayate’s Ayumu, Hidan no Aria’s Shirayuki). The anime also features the vocal talents of Yui Ariga, Yuka Iguchi (Index, Ro Kyu Bu’s Maho), Makoto Ishii (Fafner’s Kazuki) and Jun Fukuyama (Code Geass’ Lelouch). May’n sings the opening theme, Kimi Shinitamou Koto Nakare. A trailer and the OP sequence are in the videos at the end of the post.
Thoughts: Great to see Animax-Asia bringing in another new anime. I am not sure how popular it was in Japan but I did like the anime for the most part. It was a little disappointing that the animation team was not able to emphasise more of Range Murata’s style into the series. The ending was…well, why don’t you find out for yourself. Hopefully, you’ll at least enjoy it as much as I did.
