According to the latest news from AnimeNewsNetwork, the upcoming Rurouni Kenshin anime will be a two-part OVA (Original Video Animation) showing the “Shin-Kyoto Arc” (New Kyoto Arc). The first part of the OVA will be shown in Japanese theatres this coming November.The New Kyoto Arc will be a remake of the anime/manga’s Kyoto arc and will feature the battle between Kenshin Himura and Makoto Shishio from the perspective of Misao Makimachi.
The OVA will be animated by Studio DEEN (original Rurouni Kenshin series, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni) and directed by the director of the original series, Kazuhiro Furuhashi (Getbackers, Real Drive). Mari Okada (Black Butler, Hanasaku Iroha) will be scripting the series. Character designs will be led by Hiromitsu Hagiwara (Saint Beast ~Ikusen no Hiru to Yoru Hen~). Most of the original team of seiyuus’ will be returning as well.
Thoughts: This looks really promising. Most of the key staff as well as seiyuus will be returning for the anime, giving it an “authentic” feel for people (like myself) who watched the original series before. This might also be an opportunity to introduce Rurouni Kenshin to a new generation of fans. My only gripe is probably the fact that it is not the Jinchuu arc that they are animating as I was hoping to kind of wipe my memory of the horribly over-dramatic and tragic end of the second OVA.
