Cosfest IX: Let’s Make Friends Day 2 Photo Op / Coverage

While I didn’t make it for day one as I was at the Cosmo Youth Parade, I (together with my friends, Zieg and leafboi) managed to make it down to D’Marquee at Downtown East for day two of Cosfest IX.

Cosfest IX is an annual cosplay event organised by the Singapore Cosplay Club. Some of the highlights at Cosfest IX include the World Cosplay Summit (WCS) Singapore and Asia Cosplay Meet finals, the anime karaoke competition and a performance by the youth section of the Singapore Wind Symphony, Youth Winds.

While I wasn’t able to be there for the whole event. I managed to make it in time to catch the performances for the WCS Singapore finals, the winners of which would represent Singapore at the WCS Finals in Nagoya, Japan. Here are some pictures from their performances:

And the eventual winner? (Many thanks to leafboi for messaging me the results as I had to leave early…)

Oerba Yun Fang and Bahamut

And a video of their performance for good measure…

Thanks to kasuga1982 for the video

I also caught part of the performance by Youth Winds (whose conductor is apparently a big fan of anime or so it seems…) . Some of the pieces played include a Final Fantasy XIII medley, a piece from Howl’s Moving Castle, the ever-popular Cruel Angel Thesis, Caramelldansen and One Winged Angel.

While I did have a fun time with Zieg and leafboi, it wasn’t a particularly good day in terms of event pictures. Most of the pictures I got from my camera were either blurry or had someone’s head ruining the picture (T_T). Below are some of my more decent shots:

Thoughts: I think the quality of cosplay has really went up a notch this year. Costumes are now a lot more elaborate and more detailed than before. I think nearly all of the cosplayers involved in the WCS Singapore finals had LED lights on their costumes (maybe its like the “IN” thing now?). I think this really bodes well not just for the cosplay community but the anime fandom in Singapore as a whole. It really shows the enthusiasm and commitment of the anime community to their interests and craft. Can’t wait to see what Cosfest X has for me next year…

So crowded that much of the time is spent moving through traffic. =x

Oh wow. Nice BlazBlue costumes in the lead photo. WAY better than the horrid Jin+Noel that DKellis showed us in his presentation video.

Yup, it was really crowded but I think its a sign that the community is growing and slowly being accepted by the “non-otaku” public. Really impressed with some of the costumes too… for example the Rem cosplayer in http://bit.ly/97u6Nd actually has a mechanism at the back to “flap” the wings…I was like, wow…
