Welcome to my new segment, Life with Tenshi. This will be where I will do stuff which are associated with the character Tenshi (a.k.a Kanade Tachibana, the former student council president) from the anime, Angel Beats!. (Whether this segment will last or not is of course, dependent upon the circumstances I find myself in…) As seen from the above picture, today’s Life with Tenshi is going to be about Mapo Tofu.
I happened to make a trip down with Matafleur, DEATHANGELX and DKellis to Gyoza no Ohsho, which is located at Cuppage Plaza. Gyoza no Ohsho mainly serves Japanese-style Chinese food and is one of the restaurants/food places which Team GameSync visits regularly.
Not knowing what to order, I decided on Mapo Donburi on a whim, dedicating it to Tenshi from Angel Beats!. Of course, it isn’t exactly the same as what is seen in the anime as this is a “donburi”, meaning that it is served with rice (Though you can’t see it, it is under the Mapo Tofu). Taste-wise, it certainly isn’t as spicy as the one in the anime (Well, either that or Japanese people have little tolerance against spicy food…which I am tempted to believe) but other wise it taste pretty good. The tofu is pretty smooth and the minced pork and various spices really bring out the taste. Rice is a little bit too sticky (It might be because they are using Japanese rice though…) otherwise its fine. The serving is pretty large too. Definitely worth the SG$9 which I paid for it.
If anyone has any ideas of what I could do for the next Life with Tenshi, please feel free to share in the comments or contact us through out Facebook or Twitter pages.
DK says: The Mapo Tofu at Ousho was not as radioactively red as the version in the anime, which was probably made of ground chilli seeds and agony. And remember that Tenshi ate her Mapo Tofu sans rice.
Incidentally, most of Gyoza no Ousho’s menu are… I suppose you could describe it as Chinese dishes as envisioned through Japanese culture: ramen, chahan, so on and so forth. It’s pretty good.
